Summer ‘21 Looks Bright

Summer ‘21 Looks Bright by Ashleigh Gray

If summer 2020 gave isolation, precaution, and hope for better days, summer 2021 is giving community, reassurance, and the manifestation of those days. The antidote to last year’s stress, worry, and sweatpants is enjoyment, peace, and sundresses. With the success of the Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson covid-19 vaccine distribution and the ease of national lockdowns, we’re finally approaching the light at the end of the coronavirus tunnel.

In recent weeks we’ve seen proof of slow economic recovery. Airlines have reported an uptick in flights, jobs have been added, and just yesterday I overheard a woman at the nail salon say she finally felt comfortable getting a pedicure after a year of hunkering down and making TikTok videos. What’s more promising of an active summer than that?!

As I write this in my Los Angeles apartment on a Saturday night, I can hear the streets of Hollywood bustling with music, buzzing scooters, and people walking in groups. Similarly, tomorrow neighborhoods will be alive with boozy brunches, and easy strolls at outdoor shopping venues. With the weather warming up pretty much everywhere, I imagine these carefree scenes of recovery aren’t just taking place in Southern California. I also imagine we can expect more of the same in the weeks and months to come.

If you need more proof that conventional life is near, look no further than New York City’s unveiling of its $260 million floating park, Little Island. Concert venues are reopening, vacations are being booked, and the CDC even says the fully vaxxed can ditch masks?! The stage has been set for a return to normalcy. After the past 12+ months we all deserve it.

I’m excited to finally convene with family and friends to celebrate milestones we’ve postponed for over a year. There seems to be a consensus that summer 2021 will set off a renaissance at not just a collective level, but also individually. As we begin to steer our lives on the other side of the Covid crisis, there’s renewed positivity and potential. I’m here for it all. Cheers to being summertime fine, outside.
